우선, 작가 스스로 작성한 작가노트의 제목이 의미가 있는데, “부정이 아닌 시치미, 긍정이 아닌 너스레”(feigned innocence rather than negative, idle remarks rather than positive)가 그것이다.

Contemporary Society: An Unstable Paradise

By Sungjin Son, Curator of SOMA

This exhibition of Eunsook Kim conveys a minor yet serious story. It is the cruel history a mommy dog and her three puppies underwent at a cement factory in Paju. This reminds me of what the artist intended to represent. The title of the artist statement, Feigned innocence rather than negative, ideal remarks rather than positive, I believe means contemporary humans decline either to affirm or deny and are ready to shift opinion if situations change. The title thus appears highly connotative, suggestive, and symbolic. It may feel tiring living in a society where no one trusts one another, and the border between ally and enemy troops is blurred. We can review our environment in complete sympathy with the term “fatigue society”. Like others, Korean society shows an extreme accumulation of fatigue due to its radical economic development. As a result, fatal accidents have continuously taken place due to rampant development and illegal construction. The abandoned dogs seem to be a symbolic representation of Korean people living in such a society. I think insuring is not selective but inevitable in such a contemporary society. Based on the description in her statement, I can assume the following questions our society may face.

The environment-destroying factories set up in the capital area by rampant development; the social-weak and poorest classes living around the factories; conflicts family members go through due to economic pain; multicultural society; crimes as pathological phenomenon; the suicide rate and traffic accident fatalities highest in the OECD; increase of “lonely death”, referring to the phenomenon of people dying alone and remaining undiscovered for a long period of time; fatal accidents caused by lack of social safety nets; anxiety and horror resulting from such accidents; post-traumatic stress disorder. It is time for social responsibility and concern, systemized welfare, and a healing system, to cope with these problems.

The artist accepts these phenomena and realities with interest as motifs of her work, but her work may be abstruse without understanding its symbolic, intricate structure since her way of showcasing it is an attempt to create distance from true nature. Unknown years and dates are recorded on the plates, like billboards found in a soccer field, set in the four walls of the venue (including outside). These are the points of time when fatal accidents took place in South Korea. The years and dates that seem to replace famous brands on the billboards are the memento mori of a cruel history.

A black plastic bag (a plaything for puppies) moving inside and outside the venue is a symbol of and metaphor for life, while gold bullion can be seen as a monument for capitalism and materialism. Viewing her works on show inside and outside the venue, we probably feel “feigned innocence” and “idle remarks” in the title are apt. Her work seems to be a modeling combination of feigned innocence when negative, ideal remarks when positive. Let us envisage black plastic bags rolling around a soccer field, which is to remember the dates of accidents. It is presumed that the artist has chosen “feigned innocence” and “idle remarks” as a means for questioning materialism, rampant development, pathological social phenomena, anxiety, and ways of communication. Her choice looks unfamiliar and unattractive, but productive as it may generate new discourse, and she seems successful in her own visualization and contextualization. Her work leaves one to be desired: her work requires preparation for us to understand and enjoy. Advanced work required for figuring out her work is intended by the artist, but if not, we need selection and concentration. When considering the system of visualization and offering information to appreciators in an exhibition, we apparently need to choose and concentrate on what is necessary. To put it more easily, we need points and devices for appreciation to enhance our understanding of artworks.

It is time to consider ways of communication with which the general public can enjoy conceptual art and find their intellectual curiosity, moving beyond the tendency that conceptual art is only understood and relished among artists and experts.
