시멘트 공장에 애완견들이 버려졌다. 엄마 개와 3마리의 새끼 강아지들이다.엄마 개는 메리, 암컷 강아지는 똘이, 수컷 강아지들은 쿠쿠와 키키라는 새 이름표를 달았다. 그가 그들과 처음 만났을 때 똘이는 메리의 모진 괴롭힘을 받고 있었고 날이 갈수록 강도는 지나쳤다. 보다 못한 그는 똘이를 입양했고 그 후 시멘트 공장에 들려 남은 3마리를 보살폈다. 시멘트 공장은 현장에서 일하는 외국인 노동자, 일용직 노동자 그리고 사무실에서 일하는 직원들이 있다. 열악한 환경에서 일하는 노동자들에게 개는 귀찮은 존재이자 힘든 노동에 대한 장난감이었다. 쿠쿠는 시멘트 물에 던져졌고 그 속을 헤집고 나오면 또 다시 던져졌다. 키키는 그런 쿠쿠에게 장난을 걸며 위로했고 돈독하게 서로를 위해주는 버팀목이었다. 사무실 직원의 차에 치여 키키가 숨지는 일이 일어났다. 그는 신문지에 덮혀 대충 방치된 키키를 발견했고 곧장 동물 병원으로 향했지만 그날 밤 키키는 깊은 잠을 잤다. 그는 슬픔에 힘들어 했고 남은 메리와 쿠쿠를 그 해 겨울 자신의 공간으로 데리고 왔다. 쿠쿠를 처음 봤을 때가 기억이 난다. 쿠쿠는 사람들을 격하게 피했고 반사적으로 먹이통을 쏟아 버리는 버릇과 주변의 물건들을 심하게 물어뜯었다. 자신을 학대했던 사람들에 대한 반발 심리와 키키의 죽음을 옆에서 지켜보며 말 못하는 우울증과 스트레스가 있었을 것이다. 해가 바뀌면서 쿠쿠는 자신을 아껴주는 주변 사람들에게 마음의 문을 조금씩 연다. 하지만 어둠이 깔리는 시간이 시작되면 밤새 울부짖는다. 가냘픈 목소리로 누군가를 부르는 것 같아서 안쓰럽고 또 내내 가슴이 먹먹하다.
Feigned innocence rather than negative, ideal remarks rather than positive
Pet dogs abandoned at a cement plant: a mommy dog and three puppies. They are tagged with new names: mommy dog with Merry; one female puppy with Ttolyi; and two male puppies with Cuckoo and Kiki. When he first met the puppies, Ttolyi was being severely harassed by Merry, and the harassment became more severe day by day. Unable to bear this, he adopted Ttolyi, and took care of the three puppies at the cement factory. There were migrant workers, day workers, and employees working at an office there. The dogs were for the workers nothing but annoying objects or playthings during their tough labor. Cuckoo was repeatedly thrown into a cement water. Kiki brought cheer to Cuckoo: they were support for each other. One day Kiki was run over and killed. He found Kiki’s body covered with newspaper and abandoned. He brought Kiki immediately to an animal hospital, but could not return it to life. Inconsolable with sorrow, he brought Merry and Cuckoo to his place in the winter of that year. I remember when I first saw Cuckoo. Cuckoo always evaded people, had a habit of pouring over a feed bucket, and chewed up things seriously. Cuckoo perhaps suffered depression and stress caused by Kiki’s death and tried to express his defiance to those who abused him. As time slipped by, Cuckoo opened his heart to the persons around him who were favorable to him. But, Cuckoo howled all hours of the night. I feel sorry and my heart bleeds for this as he seems to call someone in a faint voice.
